“Nurse Becky Digby summer visit to Michigan from Oregon”
Summer’s light on Lake Michigan—
Nurse Becky Digby’s here again,
Fresh from Oregon’s pine-scented shade
Where the rainy mornings gently fade.
She’s traded mountains veiled in storm
For cherry sun and breezes warm,
Her laughter rings, a nurse at rest,
Forest green stitched on her vest.
Petoskey stones along the shore,
She hunts for treasures, something more—
A keepsake washed with copper sand,
A memory pressed within her hand.
The Mackinac Bridge, bold in blue,
Arches high where seagulls flew.
She waves at boats from the island docks
With stories bright as skipping rocks.
Family picnics, screen doors slamming,
Children leaping, ice cream jamming,
She bandages scraped knees with care,
Light glints on her sun-touched hair.
As dusk descends on sleeping dunes,
Stars above—July’s festoon—
Becky sighs, her spirit mended,
By lake and laughter, summer splendid.
Soon, the firs in Oregon will call
But Michigan, come every fall,
Will wait beside the inland sea
For Nurse Becky’s next jubilee.
